Perhaps not many people know that every September 16 is celebrated as International Ozone Day. The anniversary of the ozone day was set on 16 September 1987 in Montreal which was attended by 188 countries. The agreement itself was initiated by the UN Environment Program to remind the world's population of the depletion of the ozone layer on earth.
Little information about the ozone layer I was looking for for help with Googele. The ozone layer is a layer that is found in the earth's skin of the Stratosphere. Consists of Ozone molecules (O3). This layer is located at an altitude of 15-60 km above the earth's surface. The ozone layer can serve as a barrier to almost all ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. Ultraviolet light is a sun-emitted beam with a high enough energy. So if the ozone layer getting thinner, will practically lead to the increasing amount of ultraviolet radiation that falls to the surface of the earth and can cause negative impacts on the environment and also health.
Damage to the ozone layer was first detected in mid-1974, when British scientists announced that the ozone layer above Hally Bay, Antarctica, showed the depletion caused by chemical reactions of chlorine and nitrogen. It is estimated that the decline that occurred during this decade reached 30-40%. This discovery is considered one of the greatest environmental disasters of this century. And the bad news is that there is already an ozone hole of 23 Km square in 2002. Wow
With the depletion of the ozone layer, the greatest impact that the planet has on earth is that the impact of radiation. Ultraviolet ray radiation is very influential on human health. In excessive intensity, ultraviolet radiation can cause adverse effects for human skin health, for example: skin cancer and premature aging, eye damage such as cataracts, and also can lower the immune system. The most severe, excessive ultraviolet radiation can cause melanoma, a type of skin cancer is the most fatal
Another impact is a change in the temperature environment globally or commonly known as global warming. As we often hear about global warming is about the icebergs in the north pole will melt and result in rising sea levels. With rising sea levels, the lowlands of the earth will be covered by water. Other consequences are lack of clean water sources, food chain breakdowns, declining agricultural products and so on
Why ozone layer can be thinning? The ozone layer continues to be depleted because of the presence of air pollutants circulating in the atmosphere. Air pollutants that play a major role in the ozone depletion process are known as ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances) such as; Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), Hydrochloroflurocarbons, Halons, Methyl Bromide, Carbon tetrachloride, and Methyl Chloroform. It should be noted that a joint agreement was reached to equally remove CFC production gradually on January 1, 1989
These ozone-depleting substances are mostly used as coolants, foaming agents, fire extinguishers in firefighting, pesticides, and aerosol propellants. Among these air pollutants, CFCs are the main actors of ozone depletion. CFC or Freon is widely used as a refrigerant, among others used in air conditioner (AC) and refrigerator.
To help protect against the ozone layer there are many ways that can be done. For example:
-Start to reduce use or replace the tools of need that have the potential to produce ozone-depleting substances with other alternatives that are more environmentally friendly.
-Try to buy products labeled Ozone Friendly or Free CFC. These products mean that it no longer contains substances BPO or halon. Examples: Aerosol products in cans, refrigerators, etc.
-Avoid the use of plastic foodstuffs. If you can bring your own spoon and fork-Use fluorescent lights instead of incandescent bulbs.
In addition to reducing the impact of earth damage there are some tips
-Use handkerchiefs instead of tissue
– Planting trees in the yard or try to have plants around the house
– Bring your own shopping bag so no need to use plastic from our shop shopping
-Use lasting drink bottles instead of plastic bottles.
How about us. Have you participated in the recovery of the ozone layer? The real action in ozone layer protection can start from yourself. Let's celebrate the world's ozone days with real action. Begin to reduce and stop using the tools that produce ozone-depleting substances. and the good news is that if we can start from ourselves to help protect against the ozone layer, it is estimated that by 2050 the ozone layer will return to normal
Happy celebrating the ozone day. Salam kompasiana
