[Film Review] Devil Servant (2017)

Hi, Kompasianer!

This time, I will review the movie Devil Devil by Joko Anwar. Indonesian films released on 28 September 2017 are getting a lot of positive response from the people of Indonesia. The film captured 91,070 spectators on its prime day. No wonder the film is a remake of Devil Devil 1980 version of this past bearing so many nominations at the 2017 Indonesian Film Festival.

Here, I will reveal the short plot of his film first, then give my personal opinion.

Happy reading!

Rini's family (Tara Basro) is poor because she has to pay the cost of treatment of the mother (Ayu Laksmi) who is severely ill. Because of his illness, the mother can only lie in bed. So, he rang the bell every want to need someone to comb her rambur, or help her defecate. But unfortunately, soon his mother died.

The mother's death was the beginning of many horrific events at Rini's family home. Mother's figure returns to their home in unusual ways. Rini, the grandmother and the three younger siblings (Endy Arfian, Nasar Annuz and M. Adhiyat) had to face so much terror in their homes without understanding what her mother really wanted. Anxiety mounted as his father (Bront Palarae) was out of town. They kept searching and guessing, until at last they realized that it was all about the great secrets of moms they had not known.

The film opens with scenes of "introduction" that inform the audience of the family, the personal character of the characters, and the problems they encounter. Nevertheless, those scenes do not seem "patronizing". The atmosphere of a typical vintage house gives the impression haunting even since the first minute.

The story gradually darkened. Unnatural events and death after death, slowly leading the crowd toward a cloux of gripping and terror. Not to forget, equipped with a smooth twist and smooth ahead of ending.

Like a horror movie in general, there are many jumpscare in this movie. Nevertheless, the jumpscare scenes in Devotion of Satan are not monotonous so it does not seem "cheap". This film not only bombarded the audience with surprising scenes, but also gave the audience an opportunity to digest the path well. Devil's Devil has a pretty strong plot, arguably far more powerful than the plot of international horror films that have recently appeared such as Annabelle: Creation (2017) and IT (2017). The plot is detailed and quite "fresh".Although there are a lot of sobbing figures in this movie, but it seems the mother ghost figure is the most hit for the audience. The "creation" of the mother figure who is now a conversation of many people, I think is very successful. The beautiful figure of Ayu Laksmi is instantly unrecognizable here. How come? Mother's movements have given a very sinister impression even since she is told to be alive. In addition to the sound of the bell mother, the voice of a typical mother's singing nan and constantly played throughout the film, also adds a dark feel to the film.

The combination of dark visual tone, soft but creepy rhythms, deafening sounds, and unexpected detail plots all blend in perfectly.

Finally, this movie is good, worth the hype, and I think it gives a new standard for horror film in Indonesia. Hopefully this review is useful for Kompasianer who are considering to watch.

Thanks for reading!
