Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stressed that the government has stopped granting concession permits for oil palm plantations and industrial plantations on peatlands following forest and land fires that caused smoke haze in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
"No more granting concession permits to open oil palm plantations on peatlands The government will conduct a moratorium," Jokowi said in a special meeting with a number of print media editorials in Palembang on Thursday evening, October 29, 2015.
Head of State accompanied by Mensekab Pramono Anung, Minister of Forestry and Environment Siti Nurbaya, and Chief of Staff of President of Tetan Masduki explained that the permit of plantation concession in peat land has now reached 8.2 million hectares or in the last 10 years there is an addition of 6.3 million hectares.
According to him, even if there is a permit of plantation concessions in the peatland it has been certified. That is the type of plant is not a commodity of palm oil but timber such as ramin wood as greening plants.
Therefore, Jokowi ordered the Minister of Forestry and Environment Siti Nurbaya to tighten all forms of permits on forestry and plantation and revise the permits that have been issued.
"The Minister of Forestry and Environment I ask to revise the permits on forestry and plantation, so the problem of forest and land fires as happened today does not happen again in the future," said Jokowi.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Forestry and LH Siti Nurbaya added that the plantation company whose land is burning must extinguish completely and multiply the canals as a water source, as well as complete the fire suppression equipment.
"They must take responsibility for themselves if the land is burned," Siti Nurbaya.
President Jokowi and a number of ministers arrived in Palembang on Thursday morning directly from the United States after a bilateral visit. During his visit in South Sumatra, he observed forest and land fires in the Ogan Ilir and Kayu Agung districts about 40 km from Palembang.
At Kayu Agung, Jokowi holds meetings with local district government officials, and reviews hospitals, shelter houses, and casualties due to haze. (Ant / Ron / Nda)
