As an archipelagic country, Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest mangrove forest in the world. Mangrove forest has an important role and many benefits both directly for the environment and indirectly for the surrounding environment, especially for the coastal population.

In general, mangrove forests or mangroves are defined as forests that grow on brackish waters swamps that are located on the coastline and are influenced by sea tides precisely in the coastal areas and around the estuary of the river, so that mangrove plants are unique because it is a combination and characteristic- the characteristics of plants that live on land and at sea. Mangrove forest has several benefits and roles as follows:

1. Preventing Sea Water Intrusion

Sea intrusion is an enlargement of sea water to the land of land. Marine intrusion causes groundwater to become brackish so it is not good for consumption. Mangrove forest has a function of precipitating mud in the roots of mangrove trees so as to prevent the occurrence of seawater intrusion into the mainland.

2. Preventing Erosion and Beach Abrasion

Erosion is the erosion of the soil surface by the flow of water while the abrasion is the erosion of the soil surface due to sea water hempasan.Mangrove forest has efficient roots in protecting the land in the coastal area, so it can be a protective soil erosion due to water.

3.As a natural deterrent and filter

Mangrove forest is usually filled with mangrove tree roots and muddy.Akar can accelerate the decomposition of organic wastes carried to the coastal area.In addition to decomposing organic waste, mangrove forest can also accelerate the process of decomposition of marine chemicals such as oil and detergent and natural barrier against sea angina which is tight at certain seasons.

4. As a place to live and source food for some species of animals

The mangrove forest is also a suitable residence for many animals such as monitor lizards, turtles, monkeys, birds, snakes, etc.The mangrove tree trunks provide nutrients and become nursery areas for fish and invertebrates living around them. land animals take shelter or stop in perch and feed on mangrove habitat.

5. Serve in the formation of the island and stabilize coastal areasIt is often said that land-formers because the sediments and their retained soils grow coastline development over time. Mangrove flower expands coastal boundaries and provides opportunities for terrestrial plants to live and flourish in the land area.

Mangrove forests in Indonesia are now not escaped from environmental problems. As a result of poor management, mangrove forest ecosystems are threatened with extinct coastal beaches that will accelerate the process of coastal abrasion and in the next few years. So preserving mangrove forests is one of the most appropriate actions to preserve the environment .

For that mangrove forest ecosystem provides many benefits both indirectly (non-economic value) and directly to human life (economic vallues).
